Dubai World Central to go live in 2010, says HH Sheikh Ahmed
The Dubai Government's single largest urban land development
project, Dubai World Central (DWC) will go live in its first phase of operation when DWC-Al Maktoum International Airport
opens in June 2010, said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman, Dubai Aviation City Corporation.
His statement came prior to this year's edition of the Airport Show being held from May 19-21 at Dubai Airport
Expo which is expected to throw the spotlight on the region's ongoing Dhs220bn airport infrastructure investment.
'Our vision for Dubai is to be an unparalleled global commercial, trade and transportation hub with a unique integrated
multi-modal logistics platform in DWC which will change all known air, land and sea transportation parameters,' said
HH Sheikh Ahmed. 'At the core of this airport city will be the world's largest airport, DWC-Al Maktoum International,
which once operational next year will not only draw business and trade to it but also create huge residential and commercial
opportunities. While we have extended the opening date of the project to accommodate all related construction, licensing and
regulatory standards, we have not lost sight of the long-term vision of Dubai's most strategically important infrastructure
development which is designed to support Dubai's aviation, tourism, commercial and logistics requirements until 2050 and beyond,'
he added. Dubai Aviation City Corporation incorporates both Dubai World Central and Dubai Airports Company. Meanwhile,
Dubai Logistics City (DLC), a core component of DWC's multi-modal proposition, has begun licensing completed warehouses and
logistics offices and handing over facilities to tenants to commence operations on-site. At the airport, the construction
of the first of its 16 cargo terminals has been completed, well on its way to achieving the project's ultimate goal of having
an annual cargo capacity of 12 million tonnes. With a capacity of 200,000 tonnes and spread over 41,000 square metres of built
up area, the terminal's capacity can be expanded to 600,000 tonnes, if required. 'The completion of Dubai World Central's
first cargo terminal is a significant milestone in the project's history,' said HH Sheikh Ahmed. 'Dubai's forward looking
government continues to support DWC's thrust towards building a facility which will not only enable trade and commerce to
continue in these troubled economic times, but also look positively at how DWC can support the future of business in the Middle
East.' The first passenger terminal too is 80% complete with MEP works ongoing. This terminal will have an eventual
capacity of seven million passengers with the airport's ultimate capacity being 160 million annually. 'Construction
on all related infrastructure works is continuing with all our stakeholders recognising the fact that Dubai World Central
is a committed Dubai government project; and once the global economic recession tides out its cycle, work towards its final
master plan will resume at its original pace,' explained HH Sheikh Ahmed. Another major achievement is the construction
of the Middle East's tallest free standing Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower which has been completed. Currently, the tower
is being fitted with all navigational aids. Standing at 91 metres, the ATC facility also includes a separate technical
block of 6,000 square metres which will house offices, operations, technical rooms, flight simulators and a meteor observation
cabin. In addition, the facility has an airside / landside interface with secured access to airside, offering air
traffic controllers the ability to handle multiple airborne airplanes as well as on-ground aircraft. 'The completion
of construction of the ATC tower at Dubai World Central is a giant step forward for the region's aviation sector which has
constantly seen growth every year,' said HH Sheikh Ahmed. 'The completion of these facilities indicates the progress we are
making towards the opening of the airport next year and eventually of the entire development across its several components.'
Besides DWC-Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai World Central comprises DLC and DWC Aviation City, surrounded
by its real estate offerings - DWC Residential City, DWC Commercial City and DWC Golf City.

Over 50% of all exhibition space already sold.
Having firmly cemented its reputation as the world’s third largest aerospace exhibition, the Dubai
Airshow – which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007 - is gearing up for a move to its new home next year, at the
Dubai World Central aviation city in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates.
Speaking on the sidelines of Farnborough International
Airshow, F&E Aerospace, the Dubai Airshow organisers, revealed plans are well underway for the next outing of the biennial
showcase – widely revered as the fastest growing aviation show in the world’s fastest growing aerospace region.
With
over half of the total 43,820 square metres of exhibition space already contracted for next year’s Dubai Airshow, organisers
are confident that the majority of the remaining area will be reserved during this week at Farnborough.
“The
new venue and the move will allow us to significantly expand the facilities available to exhibitors and visitors, and will
drive further growth as the Dubai Airshow continues to be an industry firm favourite,” said Alison Weller, Director
- F&E Aerospace – organisers of a wide catalogue of aviation exhibitions including the Middle East Business Aviation
(MEBA) event, running this November in Dubai.
“We are already well on our way in terms of space bookings for
2009 and expect to significantly build on this during Farnborough, putting us in an extremely strong position going into the
last half of the year.”
And according to the organisers, the upcoming Dubai Airshow, taking place from 15th –
19th November 2009, will also see expansion across all areas from facilities to floor space to aircraft on display.
The
new Dubai Airshow site will cover 425,000 square metres - double the size of its former venue at Airport Expo Dubai –
and will be housed in a semi-permanent structure for its first outing before moving to a permanent facility for 2011.
“The
2009 site, although a semi-permanent structure, will boast some of the most modern facilities seen anywhere. We have everything
we’ve had in previous years plus more. In addition, the reception building and support facilities is expected to double
in size to cope with the increased number of trade visitors and we have also swelled the number of restaurants and press facilities.
We also have a dedicated flying control centre onsite,” said Weller.
F&E Aerospace has expanded the chalet
line for 2009 to 140 – with over 50 percent of these already being booked. The chalets will also be enlarged to offer
more space and flexibility for exhibitors.
Car parking facilities will be significantly increased with space for more
than 4,000 cars available, rising to 7,000 for subsequent events. Another major plus for the event will be that from 2012,
the site will be linked to the Dubai Metro - the emirate-wide mass transport system which is currently under construction.
“The
Dubai Airshow is no longer a regional show but a world-class, internationally-recognised aviation forum which impacts the
global aerospace landscape. This comes as no surprise, due to Dubai’s global recognition as a world class trade, business
and tourism destination that has broken all conventional boundaries of excellence,” added Weller.
Dubai Airshow
2007 boasted 850 exhibitors and 11 national pavilions representing 50 countries – 130 of these being new to the region.
45,420 visitors attended over the five days - 10,000 more than in 2005 – and over 140 aircraft were displayed on the
static park, which has given the organisers a considerable platform to work from for the 2009 outing.
In addition,
the show also saw over US$150 billion worth of orders placed during its five days and now holds the record for the largest
amount of deals ever concluded at one event.
The Dubai Airshow has benefited from the ongoing commitment of the Dubai
Government and Department of Civil Aviation with both His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Vice President,
Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Department of Civil
Aviation, taking a keen personal interest in its development.

Tourism: The primary source of the UAE’s rapidly growing tourism sector is the Dubai Emirate, which hosts the world’s
tallest hotel. According to the UAE government, Dubai’s tourism revenue exceeds its oil revenue. The emirate’s
302 hotels hosted 6.4 million visitors from India, Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, the Philippines, Europe, Australia, and South
Africa in 2006. However, according to the UAE government, the emirate’s initial target of 15 million visitors by 2010
will not be met because of airport and hotel construction delays, coupled with delays in obtaining additional aircraft for
